The Practice Dress turned good

A little while back I posted about this denim dress and that it was a practice dress before I cut into the 'good' fabric.

This is the 'good' fabric (bought locally) and the dress is sewn.

The idea for this dress has been in my head (with a lot of other stuff!!) for about a year or more.

and it has turned out mostly how I imagined.

I made a hat - same as for the first Feliz dress - but this time lined it with a heavier cotton, and it holds its shape much better.

I could have made it a little longer, so I thought of adding a pair of short leggings. I didn't want to cut up a new pair, so I used a pair from last year, cut them just at the knees, mended a few holes! and added ruffles and ric-rac.

This is for my daughter to wear to another cousins First Communion - I suppose it's a bit over the top? - I just couldn't stop sewing!!

Costume - part 2

I make so little for the boys that when the 9 year old mentioned he would like to dress up as Obi Wan Kenobi from Star Wars I really wanted to make something for him. While browsing through the Oliver+S Flickr pool I got the inspiration from Pigeon-pair who made the Oliver+S pyjamas as a Luke Skywalker costume for her son.

So I sized up the pattern, changed the sleeves and added an Obi belt from Patty Young's Kyoko pattern adding cord instead of ribbon.

He loved it, especially the sleeves and how they hang down. The material was from 2 old shirts and an old pair of trousers that my husband didn't wear, which were ready for recycling.

Nothing but headaches and tension in my face again since Thursday - Counselling day. But the lightness is still there so I have that to hold onto.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! . . . . . Re-cut, Re-make, Re-sew!

This is an old 'Tommy' shirt belonging to my husband, which he got from his brother.

When he was about to throw it out I asked him to pull off the buttons for me. While he was doing that, it struck me that the material could be used.

I unpicked the seams to make it flat, and cut the waistcoat pieces from the sleeves ( the lining is made from cotton I had already). The pattern is from Ottobre 3/2009, no.20. It involves a lot of turning inside out and outside in which can get a bit confusing, but I love the result - it just needs buttons.

The dress is from a Japanese pattern I made already from the book Favourite Dresses dress B, a lovely easy pattern. The pattern pieces were cut from the back and the front of the shirt. I managed to get enought bias pieces from the scraps. The little flower appliques had to be designed as one was needed to cover a hole in the shirt.

The big question . . . . how safe are the rest of his shirts (cue - Jaws music....)!
